Poem : East Wind

Peace Akinwale 2014
Edited by Funmito Adesanya

Immense blowing of the east wind
In the cool of the evening
Relaxing the nerves even as of old
Its whistling accompanied by waves of chirping
Creating a rhythm
The trees dancing to its tune
Likewise the children and the maidens

In the cool of the evening
When the sun is down,
The square welcomes the assembling of the people
To the refreshing breeze
Sending chills through the spine of the day

The breeze unites the people
While the old men sit and enjoy fresh palm wine
The women gossip
And the sucklings play with wrappers between their legs
Children build houses in the sand
The maidens roll their waists to the rhythm of the breeze and chirping of birds
To the admiration of the young men displaying their vigor

The cool of the day unites the spirit, soul and the body
Fathers feeling proud of their wards
Mothers comprehending maternal joys
Maidens giggling, smiling and laughing
To the witty jokes and acrobatic movements of the young men
With little glances exchange from time to time.
